Hurricane

The endless cacophony of sound,
A whining whistle so loud,
It drowns out every other serendipitous note,
Every tender caress of nature’s music.

The chills fly down my spine,
Like racing robins,
Every hair standing on end.

I can hear the call,
Ringing through my bones,
Drowning out the sounds,
Of my heart, of my steps,
The tempo coursing through my veins.

Part of me is torn asunder;
The urge to run itches in my feet,
My muscles tense,
Ready to spring forward and soar,
To taste the earth beneath my toes.

But the sound holds me,
Like a lullaby captures a child,
Weaving its iron web.

Should I feel fear?

Should I struggle? Fight?

The thoughts race through my mind,
But I find no will,
No inspiration,
To do either.

Instead I merely stand there,
Enraptured,
Caught in moment,
In the fearful beauty that frames my captor.

Its face is dark and malignant,
Full of blinding fury,
And booming rage.

Every gust of its temper dances,
Prancing upon my skin,
Its frantic tears stream downward,
Coursing across my face,
My hands,
My back,
Pooling at my feet.

Yet amidst the anger,
And destruction it has wrought,
I find myself at peace,
Facing the demon with naught but a smile,
And a knowing gaze.

For I have felt the same;
The agony that colors the world,
A black curtain of suffering,
And the seething slashes of crimson,
Dotted with the stains of wrath.

But as the thunder cracks,
And the lightning flashes,
One again,
I remain calm.

Treasuring each drop of rain that falls,
Unbidden,
With that knowledge that,
For every storm,
And every hurricane,
The hopeful sun will still rise,
An inspiring beacon of light in the dark.
